Hamptworth is a superb and challenging golf course set in the tranquility of the New Forest. New members
are always greeted with a warm welcome and with the variation in handicaps every new member will easily
fit into Hamptworth Ladies’ golf. Ladies meet twice a week on a Tuesday and Saturday morning for medals,
stablefords and for less serious, but pleasurable, competitions; throughout the year we play Cup and Trophy
competitions. At other times during the week there are always ladies looking for a game .
We feature strongly in Wiltshire County events and have in the past won the County Pakeman League and
the County Championship Trophy. We enter a team in the Wellow Rally each year, usually with great
success. All ladies are encouraged to play in the Ladies’ Friendly matches that are played throughout the
Summer, against clubs in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset. Our ladies so enjoy their golf that they find time
to enter Ladies’ Opens and Coffee mornings during the summer.
As a section we are managed by the Ladies Committee, with the Captain representing the ladies on the
General Committee of the Club.
Hamptworth is a friendly and sociable club with an extensive social calendar, which includes a variety of
events that are open to members and their friends.

The History of Hamptworth's Ladies Section
Pat Millington, with prior experience of captaincy, became our first Lady Captain and was instrumental in
setting up our Ladies’ constitution.
Despite being a young club, we have members who have represented the County in all county teams –
Sally Huffam and Jo Shorrocks in the first team, Dorothy Lang, Liz Sorrell, Alison Charles in the second
team, Nancy in the second and the Juniors, plus Kyra Horlock, Sam Ogilvy and Fiona Haslem in the Juniors.
Sally Huffam’s daughter, Katie, has coached the Wiltshire Girls. Rosemary Denman has been Captain of the Wiltshire Past Captains.
Although only a small Ladies’ Section, we play matches against other clubs, both Ladies’ and mixed, and
enter the various competitions available. In 2001, we were joint winners of the Pakeman League. We have
also been second in the Legg Bowl. In 1999 we won the Peggy McKenzie Plate.
The Club has many activities. In winter this ranges from quizzes, both General Knowledge and Golf Rules,
Casino nights, Race nights, Murder Mystery nights and wine tasting. Throughout the year, many dinners
and dances are held to celebrate various occasions.
We fund raise for different charities each year and have also donated a half-way house and two benches to
the Club. As a section, we organise away days and golfing holidays and were lucky enough to visit Prince
Charles’ Charity Shop at his home in Tetbury, Gloucestershire.
Our ownership, as happens with many new clubs, has changed and we are now under the direction of Mark
Lawrence and his co-directors. Mark is very much involved with the Wiltshire Boys and also the England
Boys. The South-West Pros’ Championship was held at the Club in 2008 as was the Wiltshire Ladies’
County Championship.
In the 2008 Wiltshire Ladies’ County Championship, Jo Shorrocks, having previously won the South-West
Championship, fought well against Hannah Turland and only lost on the 37th hole. She received the Sybil
Parsons Trophy for the best 36 hole scratch score in the qualifying rounds, Kyra Horlock won the Barber
Dish and Hamptworth won the Team Shield for the Club with the best gross scores in the qualifying rounds
(Jo Shorrocks, Kyra Horlock and Alison Charles).
2008 was a good year for the ladies of Hamptworth and we hope we go from strength to strength in the
coming years. |
