The Club's History
Hamptworth Golf & Country Club was opened by Robert Key, MP, on May 1st 1994, under the aegis
of the
course
constructor and owner, Brian Pierson. Brian became our first president. Our 18-hole
course was
designed by
Philip Sanders and built to Brian’s high standards. Parts of it have been
improved from year to
year and the
course is managed by Tim Facer and his team of green keepers.
Our professional is now
Nick Stoner. We
started off in porta-cabins but, within three years, had a
very smart clubhouse.
As we are right on the border of Hampshire and Wiltshire, we could have applied to Hampshire
County for
membership but we decided to join our proper county of Wiltshire and became members
of the Wiltshire
County
Golf Associations.
Our ownership, as happens with many new clubs, has changed and we are now under the direction of Mark
Lawrence and his co-directors. Mark is very much involved with the Wiltshire Boys and also the England
Boys. The South-West Pros’ Championship was held at the Club in 2008 as was the Wiltshire Ladies’
County Championship.
Our membership when we opened was just over 100 and is now over 800. Besides the golf course,
a gym
was
included in the new clubhouse and croquet lawns were laid, which are used for national
competitions.
We now
have two tennis courts as well. |
